Petition from AST to the FAA

Chicago, IL, USA | 11.25.25

AST formally requests the agency to help reduce the risk of runway excursions through the wider use of aircraft braking action reports.

“...no action of the FAA would produce a greater safety benefit at less cost than encouraging the wider use of ABAR technology, as proposed herein...”

Aviation Safety Technologies

At AST, we’re proud of our years of collaboration with the FAA, and gratified by the important progress FAA regulators have made in exploring and addressing safety issues such as runway excursions.

We’re now asking the FAA to more proactively nurture the proven safety technology that’s available today, including Aircraft Braking Action Reports (ABARs).

The FAA has already found ABAR technology to be the most accurate, precise, and timely means of assessing and reporting on the runway surface friction available to incoming aircraft. This insight is vital to helping mitigate runway excursions. It's now time for the FAA to more widely publicize its findings regarding the advantage of ABAR technology.
